These rules are mandatory and MUST be respected by all students of Mayaro Secondary School.
SCHOOL RULES
Re: Code of Ethics (Discipline in School)

Parents are advised to study carefully the following rules as specified below and to strictly adhere to them in order to maintain a well-disciplined school. However, in order to enforce these rules, we need your full support and co-operation.
​
1. ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT/CELLPHONES CAMERA PHONES- If students choose to bring phones to school, these phones will be kept in a safe box. Before the start of Assembly students will sign in their labelled phones and place them in a labelled envelope which will be collected by the School Safety Officer, Vice Principal (Discipline) and Deans.
If students do not lodge their phones at the start of school and if phone is seen it WILL be confiscated and only returned to a parent. The school will not investigate any loss of stolen phones as ALL phones are to be surrendered at the beginning of the school day.
NO Head-Phones, Boom Boxes, IPods, MP3 and MP4 players are allowed on the school compound.

2. A. UNIFORM -Students should always be attired in the correct school uniform.
​
GIRLS
-
White shirt with printed monogram (shirt to be worn inside the skirt)
-
Blue skirt (at least four inches below the knee) with belt of the same material
-
Plain white vest/T- shirt under shirt
-
Plain black shoes/sneakers with no other colours or stripes. No high-top boots are allowed.

Plain black socks
-
Skirt waist bands should be no more than 2 inches wide
-
1 pair of small knob earrings – gold, silver or white (no diamantes, no hoops) to be worn on lower ear lobe only.

Inappropriate earrings will be taken away and returned at the end of the term.
-
No chains, rings, hand bands or nose rings are allowed.
-
ONLY blue, black, yellow or white hair accessories are allowed.
-
No make-up, shaved eyebrows or fake eyelashes.
-
No colouring of hair, highlights, hair extensions, weaves or wigs. Hair should be neatly combed and styled in a manner that is appropriate for school.

Nails should be kept short and clean and UNPOLISHED at all times.

No tattoos

No glass bottles
-
No spiked metal combs/pick-combs and plastic rat tail combs

No towels, rags and bandanas
-
No hoodies
-
No slides, slippers, sandals, push toe slippers or flip flops

B. UNIFORM-Students should always be attired in the correct school uniform.

BOYS
-
A white shirt with printed monogram (worn inside pants)

Plain White V-Neck vests/ T-shirts
-
Blue pants with plain black belt – no belts with continuous metal rings. A simple plain and unadorned black belt with simple silver/gold buckle. No cloth belts are allowed.

Plain black shoes/sneakers with no other colours or stripes. No high-top boots are allowed.
-
Absolutely NO earrings are allowed.
-
No chains, rings, bracelets or hand bands are allowed.

No turned up pants legs
-
No pants leg inside of socks
-
No haircuts with markings. Hair should be neatly combed. Boys with markings, other than a straight part, will be required to shave off design.

No pencil pants – pants’ legs should be at least six (6) inches wider than ankles.

No tattoos

No glass bottles

PENALTY FOR DISOBEYING RULES CONCERNING UNIFORM Should a student attend school inappropriately dressed, he/she should produce a WRITTEN EXCUSE, signed by his/her parent/guardian, giving reason/s for incorrect uniform. Students will be given one to five days to comply.
​
3. LATECOMING / ABSENTEEISM
If student is 2 or more times late per week, parents will be contacted to provide an excuse.
​
Whenever a student is absent form school, he/she MUST submit a written excuse signed by his/her parent/guardian giving reason/s for absence. This written excuse will be signed by his/her Form Teacher and kept in his/her file. If a student has been absent from school because of illness for an extended period of time, he/she must present a Medical Certificate. The student, upon return, must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

4. DETENTION CLASS
Detention classes have been set up to discipline students for incompletion of assignments, impoliteness to teachers, peers and other members of the school’s community, habitual late-coming and any other disciplinary matter.
​
5. INDISCIPLINE/ DRUGS AND DRUG USE
The school has a zero-tolerance approach to violence and any form of indiscipline. Students caught stealing, extorting money, gambling (taxing), using obscene language, in possession of weapons and/or drugs and setting fire to school property are liable to be charged. All cases of sexual offences against students will be reported to the police. No cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, alcohol or alcoholic beverages are allowed on the compound. Vaping on the school compound is prohibited.

STUDENTS MUST:
1. Attend school regularly and punctually.
2. Wear the correct uniform at all times.
3. Stay in the classroom, remain seated and revise quietly when the teacher is absent.
4. Behave in a way that respects the rights of all persons.
5. Respect school property and/or the property of others.
6. Refrain from bringing large sums of money to school.
7. Submit consent forms signed by parents/guardians before attending fieldtrips.
8. Use the corridors/pathways provided for walking.
9. Refrain from walking on the lawns.
10. Refrain from chewing gum.

NOTE:
-
Though not the preferred course of action, the school reserves the right to seek police assistance from time to time based on the seriousness of the offences committed.

All cases of sexual offences against students will be immediately reported to the Child Protection Unit/Children’s Authority. The school looks forward to working with students and parents to ensure that high levels of discipline are maintained so that students could achieve positive educational outcomes
